Vermont State Employees’ Association Endorses Lieutenant Governor Molly Gray for Congress

Jun 16, 2022

Montpelier, VT — Today, the Vermont State Employees’ Association (VSEA) endorsed Lieutenant Governor Molly Gray for Congress. The union’s support for Gray came alongside endorsements in four other statewide offices.

“Molly Gray got into the fight to protect the pensions for state employees and never backed down. She spoke truth to power and stood up for what she believed was morally right,”  said Aimee Bertrand Towne, VSEA’s president. “The Lieutenant Governor withstood withering pressure from the powerful political establishment and never wavered. State employees will not forget her leadership. VSEA members know we can count on Molly to fight for us in DC, because she fought for us in Montpelier.”

The VSEA is a union of over 6,000 workers from throughout Vermont’s state services including employees of the Vermont State government, Vermont State Colleges, Vermont Judiciary, Defender General’s Office, Vermont State Housing Authority, and State’s Attorneys’ Offices. The VSEA is the second-largest union by membership in the state.

“During my term as Lieutenant Governor, and before that, serving statewide as an Assistant Attorney General, I’ve seen firsthand the crucial work our state employees do,” Gray said. “It’s why I’ve stood shoulder-to-shoulder with them to defend against proposed pension cuts. And it’s why, in Congress, I’ll work to pass the PRO Act, tackle our state’s workforce  crisis, and always put Vermont’s working families first.”

The VSEA is the third major union to endorse Gray’s candidacy, following the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, and Transportation Workers (SMART) and The North Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters (NASRCC). Gray also has the support of former Vermont governors Madeleine Kunin and Howard Dean.

Gray announced her run for the U.S. House of Representatives on December 6, 2021. If elected in 2022, she will be the first woman in Vermont’s history to hold federal office. More information about Gray’s campaign for Congress can be found here.
