Burlington, VT — Today, the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) endorsed Lieutenant Governor Molly Gray for Congress.
“Whether working in Congress, serving as an Assistant Attorney General and federal law clerk, or leading the state as Lieutenant Governor, Molly Gray has spent her career working alongside – and standing up for – public employees,” David Gonzalez, AFGE District 2 National Vice President, said. “We know that Molly will be an ally to federal employees in Congress. We’re thrilled to offer her our support.”
The AFGE is the largest federal employee union; it boasts 700,000 federal and D.C. government employees, including 313,000 dues-paying active members; its members include lawyers, health care workers, law enforcement officers, census workers, and park rangers. It represents more than 2,500 federal employees in Vermont, and is an AFL-CIO affiliate.
“From the Veterans Affairs hospital in White River Junction to United States Citizenship and Immigration Services offices in Chittenden County, federal employees live and work in every corner of our state,” Gray said. “On Capitol Hill and as a federal law clerk in Rutland, I’ve worked with judges, counsels, court staff and other federal employees – and seen firsthand the excellent work they do. As the proud daughter and sister to Vermont veterans, I know the excellent care our Vermont VA workers provide. I can’t wait to fight for – and work alongside – our federal employees in Washington.”
The AFGE is the fifth major union to endorse Gray’s candidacy, following NAGE-SEIU, the Vermont State Employees’ Union, the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, and Transportation Workers (SMART) and The North Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters (NASRCC). Gray also has the support of former Vermont governors Madeleine Kunin and Howard Dean.
Gray announced her run for the U.S. House of Representatives on December 6, 2021. If elected in 2022, she will be the first woman in Vermont’s history to hold federal office. More information about Gray’s campaign for Congress can be found here.
